2020-2021 SHMS Course Registration for Current 6th and 7th Grade Students
On Friday, January 17, course registration information will be shared with current 6th and 7th grade students. Students will bring home a Registration Worksheet and Online Course Registration Instructions (for Infinite Campus). Parents/guardians are encouraged to read this information and provide guidance in making appropriate course selections.
1. Complete the Registration Worksheet.
2. Both parent and student are asked to sign and date the bottom of the Registration Worksheet.
3. Use the Online Course Registration Instructions to complete the registration process in Infinite Campus.
4. Student will return the completed Registration Worksheet and printed confirmation with parent signature to the homeroom teacher.
6th and 7th grade students who have not completed the online course registration process will do this at school during homeroom on Wednesday 1/22 and Thursday 1/23. All course registration will be finalized the week of January 27, 2020. Call Scott Highlands Middle School at 952-423-7581 if you have questions about the registration process.

In May, current fifth grade students will participate in middle school transition activities and parents and students are invited to an orientation meeting. We look forward to partnering with you in creating a valuable, enriching middle school experience for your child.
All 6th grade students are required to take the following classes:

- BAND 6
- Your child must have participated in 5th grade Band
- All students previously enrolled in 5th grade band should continue playing their instrument! The middle school band program consists of a large group band rehearsal and a 30-minute small group/individual lesson. In addition to learning new concert band songs, students will have the opportunity to participate in jazz bands, woodwind ensembles, brass ensembles, and percussion ensembles. Studies have shown that playing a band instrument helps to improve student performance in all areas of learning, and students will meet many new people. All students who make a sincere, consistent effort will have a positive experience in the SHMS band program.
- MUSIC 6
- Sixth grade music is designed to offer a wide variety of musical experiences. Students will make music by singing, playing electric keyboards and playing acoustic guitars. Students will also listen to and learn about different styles of music from classical to jazz. In addition, students will be introduced to patriotic music, musicals, world music, GarageBand, music history, and music in the movies.
TARGETED SERVICES CLASSES
Targeted Services Classes are scheduled by the administration. If it is determined by assessment data that a student is below proficiency with academic achievement as compared to their same-age peers, the student may be placed in a class to work on the identified need areas. The need for this class may override personal elective choice. In addition, special education or English language learners may be placed into classes to support their individualized learning needs.

Please take a moment now to review the elective course descriptions and elective combinations with your child. Based on the student registration data, the school administration will determine the classes to be offered, the staff needed and a master schedule of classes for next year.
The trimester classes Art/Family & Consumer Science/Technology Education are required courses for most 6th grade students. The current fifth grade students attending Diamond Path School of International Studies have all studied one of two foreign languages, either Chinese or Spanish, 90 minutes per week for FIVE years. In order for your child to continue his/her study of a foreign language as a 6th grade student at SHMS, it is important to note that the Chinese or Spanish class may replace either the elective course (Band/Music) or the combination
of courses Art/Family & Consumer Science/Technology Education. As parents, if you choose to have your child continue his/her foreign language study in Chinese or Spanish, this class will meet every other day for 53 minutes per class. If you choose not to have your child continue with a foreign language in sixth grade, you will register your child for Band or Music and the combination of courses Art/Family & Consumer Science/Technology Education.

6th GRADE ELECTIVE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
- APPLIED ARTS COMBINATION (By choosing a full year APPLIED ARTS COMBINATION, you are agreeing to take one trimester each of the courses listed below.) ART classes are designed to provide a wide variety of artistic experiences at the middle level. Projects may include, but are not limited to: clay, colored pencil, watercolors/tempera, pencil/charcoal, oil/chalk pastels, brush and ink, plaster, paper maché and woven materials. The art projects are designed around the elements and principles of design, art history and self-evaluation. FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE classes prepare students to begin their journey toward becoming independent, productive citizens. Students will engage in hands-on food and sewing labs. The areas of concentration include nutrition and wellness (cooking procedures, measurement, safety, recipe preparation), career planning, money management, child development, life skills and resource management, and Design (Interiors, Apparel, and Construction). TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION is a program that incorporates both traditional hands-on machinery with the newest fab lab equipment. Using the Engineering design process students will be able to explore manufacturing, product design and thinking outside of the box. Safety, respect and responsibility in the work place is an underlying part of the curriculum. Students are encouraged to work within the constraints of their projects to design artifacts that express their creative and individual abilities.

- You don’t want to miss the CHINESE FUN! Did you know that Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world? Students will learn the authentic language and cross-cultural communication with a native Mandarin speaker from China. Comprehensive practical language skills are taught through Chinese movies, cultural games and celebrations, making Chinese food, and writing letters to Chinese middle school students in China. The Chinese curriculum at Scott Highlands parallels the high school Chinese curriculum (levels I & II). There are extended learning opportunities available, such as attending a Chinese weekend camp, celebrating Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year with handcrafts, food, and games, and participating in the Chinese Class Market. - SPANISH A
- Your child must have participated in Spanish at Diamond Path or have previously taken Spanish.
- The middle school curriculum is the same as the high school Spanish level 1 curriculum, the only difference is that the course is offered every other day over a period of 2 years. Topics covered in class will include basic vocabulary about personal likes and dislikes, food, describing yourself and others, school activities, time, feelings, family, going shopping and traveling around town. Students will begin to understand fundamental grammar concepts. Students must be prepared to study in and out of class and to complete homework outside of class. Activities will revolve around speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Grading will be based on daily homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. Successful completion of this and future middle school Spanish classes will ensure entry into an advanced Spanish class in high school.

BAND
All students previously enrolled in band should continue playing their instrument! Seventh grade band students will explore even more opportunities for performance in groups such as concert band, jazz band, jazz combo, holiday band, percussion ensemble, woodwind groups, and brass groups. Some of these groups will also perform on field trips. Studies have shown that playing a band instrument helps to improve student performance in all areas of learning. You have learned the basics – now explore the next level of music making!
CHOIR
Do you want to sing fun songs with your friends? Register for Choir! In Choir, we sing everything from Bach to rock; everything from “Ode to Joy” to “Lean on Me”, and music of different world cultures! Choir is all large group singing, so no need to worry if you are a shy singer! However, for you star singers, there are also solo and small group opportunities! Additional choir opportunities include flex choirs, a cappella groups (similar to Pentatonix), and group voice lessons. Choir members have the opportunity to perform in at least two concerts throughout the year. Come with a great attitude and positive participation while we have fun making music together in Choir!
CHINESE A

In addition, students will learn about Chinese culture through songs, videos, stories, and other authentic texts. Students are expected to spend time outside of class to complete homework, study vocabulary words, and prepare for quizzes and tests.
SPANISH A
By studying Spanish, students will have an academic edge! Research has shown that children who have studied a world language have higher reading, language, and math test scores. Students learn basic vocabulary about personal likes and dislikes, food, describing yourself and others, school activities, time, feelings, family, going shopping and traveling around town. Students will use the vocabulary in simple questions and answers through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Outside class work will include studying flashcards, homework completion, and preparation for quizzes and tests. Active class participation is important. Grading will be based on daily homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. This curriculum is the same as the high school Spanish level 1 curriculum; the only difference is that the course is offered every-other-day over a period of 2 years. Students should have a strong academic background to ensure success in this class.
SPANISH B
Sixth grade Spanish A is required for this class. Students who successfully complete Spanish A and Spanish B are encouraged to take a more advanced level of Spanish in high school. Curriculum topics will include: clothes, food, the home, celebrations, sports and health and fitness. The focus is on grammar, culture and vocabulary.
APPLIED ARTS COMBINATION
By choosing a full year APPLIED ARTS COMBINATION, you are agreeing to take one trimester each of the courses listed below. The applied arts courses are new courses designed for anyone interested! No previous experience is required. All activities will be different from the current school year. Students may opt to take TWO Applied Arts Combinations.

ELECTIVE COURSE OFFERINGS
BAND
Eighth grade band is a prerequisite for the many opportunities that await students in our nationally recognized high school band programs. Eighth grade band members will continue to have many performance opportunities including concert band, jazz band, jazz combo, small ensembles, holiday band, and pep band. Studies have shown that students who participate in instrumental music programs have higher grades, perform better on tests, and have the confidence of a strong and positive social group with which to interact. Perform fun and challenging music while creating memorable middle school experiences!
CHOIR
In eighth grade choir, we continue to sing fun songs from a variety of musical styles! No prior experience is necessary, and students new to the choir program are welcome! In addition to our two regular concerts, 8th grade students may have the opportunity to represent SHMS in the All-District 8th Grade Choir Festival! Additional choir opportunities include flex choirs, a cappella groups (similar to Pentatonix), and group voice lessons. So, bring a great attitude and positive participation to eighth grade choir and enjoy!
CHINESE B
This class is recommended for students who are maintaining at least a C average or above in seventh grade Chinese A. An intensive review of Chinese A paves the way for new vocabulary, grammar, and cultural information. Students will build upon the skills learned in seventh grade by listening, speaking, reading, and writing Chinese. Topics studied include: calendar, time, daily routines, the classroom, food, colors, and clothes. Students are expected to spend time outside of class to complete homework, study vocabulary words, and prepare for quizzes and tests. In January, students will receive a recommendation for high school Chinese 1 or Chinese 2 based on their September-January class work.
CHINESE C
Seventh grade Accelerated Chinese B is required for this class. This class is recommended for students who are maintaining a C average or above in seventh grade Accelerated Chinese B. Students who successfully complete Accelerated Chinese C will be well prepared to continue Chinese at a more advanced level in high school. In this class, students will build upon their Chinese language skills through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Topics studied include: money, body parts, physical descriptions, sports, transportation, directions, and even reading part of the short novel “Poor Anna” in Chinese! In addition, students will deepen their understanding of Chinese culture through songs, videos, games, and stories. Students are expected to spend time outside of class to complete homework, study vocabulary words, and prepare for quizzes and tests.
SPANISH B
This class is recommended for students who are maintaining at least a C average or above in seventh grade Spanish A. The focus of eighth grade Spanish is to prepare students for the high school second year class. An intensive review of seventh grade Spanish paves the way for new vocabulary, grammar, and cultural information to come. At times, classes will be entirely in Spanish. Curriculum topics will include: clothes, food, the home, celebrations, sports, and health and fitness. Activities, projects, and games are also part of the class. Students are expected to complete homework, study vocabulary on a regular basis, and prepare for quizzes and tests. Grading will be based on daily homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. In January, students may be recommended for the second year high school Spanish class based on their September-January class work. SPANISH 2 Seventh grade Accelerated Spanish B is required for this class. This class is only recommended for students who are maintaining at least a C average or above in seventh grade Accelerated Spanish B. This class meets EVERY DAY and students receive high school credit for Spanish 2. Students in this class will NOT be enrolled in Communications 8. Curriculum topics will include: the past tense, going on vacation, technology, and daily activities. The focus is on grammar, culture and vocabulary.
APPLIED ARTS COMBINATION
By choosing a full year APPLIED ARTS COMBINATION, you are agreeing to take one trimester each of the courses listed below. The applied arts courses are new courses designed for anyone interested! No previous experience is required. All activities will be different from the current school year. Students may opt to take TWO Applied Arts Combinations.

DRAMA
Ready…Set…Action! Come explore several aspects of drama. You will develop your creativity, group, and performance skills in a fun and active environment. Become a member of the cast and crew as you write, produce, and act in a unique performance. Your journey to Broadway begins here! No experience necessary – just a positive attitude and willingness to participate in daily theater activities as well as perform in the culminating theater performance!
JOURNALISM
Students will gain a working knowledge of modern journalism through hands-on projects such as photojournalism, television journalism, writing and producing newspaper articles, creating podcasts, and a variety of other current and emerging media formats.
