Speech Team

SHMS' Speech Team (a.k.a. "Declam Team") is an opportunity for students to hone their public speaking skills, gain confidence, and have fun.  The 2020-21 Season will be entirely virtual.

Practice will take place over Zoom on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3pm-4:30pm.  Students should come to practice one day per week.  On their practice day, students will join the Zoom for team meeting at 3pm for announcements and instruction.  Then students will practice their piece until it is time to work one-on-one with a coach in individual coaching sessions. After their coaching session, students will be free to leave the Zoom.

This year there will be only 2 Speech Meets.  They will take place during normal practice time during the week of January 19th, 2021 and the week of February 1st, 2021.  The first meet will be "in house" with only other Scott Highlands Students.  The second meet will hopefully include other middle schools, so students can learn from their peers.  The meets will involve students performing their piece twice for two different judges who will give them a score of A, B, or C based on a variety of criteria.  Students will then be awarded ribbons based on their scores:

Blue Ribbon - 2 "A" Scores
Red Ribbon - 1 "A" and 1 "B" Score
White Ribbon - 2 "B" Scores
Purple Ribbon - 1 "B" and 1 "C" Score
Yellow Ribbon - 2 "C" Scores
